GForce GF-P1155-564 10-Cup Professional Rice Cooker with Food Steamer, White/Silver

I have a reputation among my friends and family...don't let her cook the rice. I don't know why...I follow instructions, read recipes, and still my rice comes out either sticky when it isn't supposed to be, or crunchy, which is never good, even with fried rice. So when I got the opportunity to test this rice cooker, I jumped at it. I have to state...emphatically, to use all parts of the cooker, and to read and follow the instructions. I decided to not use the upper steamer basket since I was just making rice, not steaming any meat or vegetables with it.

This is an automatic cooker, so there is no adjusting of the temperature or messing with it. And it claims that as soon as the water is cooked off the rice, it will turn off the cooking and just keep it on warm until served. So I set it up, put one cup of long-grain white rice and 2 cups of water into the large pan at the bottom of the cooker. First mistake I made was not rinsing the rice like it suggested. Then I put the glass lid on top, flipped the switch and left the kitchen. About 5-6 minutes later, my husband comes into my home office and asks..."Is it supposed to be making so much noise?" So I checked and the starchy liquid on the rice was bubbling up and causing the glass lid to hit against the metal pot. So I quickly removed the lid, put the steamer basket on top where it belonged and re-covered it, and it cooked the rest of the time quietly.

I was afraid my faux paux would have ruined yet another batch of rice, but after only about 20 minutes I checked on it and the cook light was off, and the warm light was on, indicating that the rice was done. I removed the lid, and the steamer basket and staring back at me was perfectly cooked rice. You really don't know how happy that made me. I made fried rice with it, and it was the perfect texture. But when I got to the bottom of the pot, I think I found out why it was important to rinse the rice. The starch browned on the bottom of the cooker and while not impossible to clean, it made me fear for the pan's finish. I just soaked it for a few minutes in hot water, and the browned bits came off easily. I'm going to try rinsing next time, to see if that is what happened. But overall, I am very happy with this and plan to use it often since rice is one of my husband's favorite side dishes.

I received a complimentary sample of this steamer in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
